Crowns and Bridges at Wellness Dental Bronte
When you have teeth that are worn out, severely damaged or completely missing, our custom crowns and bridges can help put a smile back on your face.
Each of our crowns and bridges are custom made by Australian labs, so nothing is ever sent abroad. We choose domestic products to ensure the highest quality of restoration and an efficient process for our patients. It’s what we would want if it were our own health in question.
What are Crowns?
Dental crowns — or as some people call them, “caps” — are protective covers that sort of work like a helmet over a tooth. They’re different from a filling that goes inside of teeth; rather, crowns go over and around them.
You might need a crown if you have a large filling that’s wearing out or the tooth is significantly cracked. Crowns help hold the tooth together to prevent further fractures.
We also recommend crowns on teeth that have had root canal treatment, since the enamel is more brittle. Putting a cap over the tooth will help prevent premature wear or any unwanted chipping.
Crowns can also be used along with dental implants to replace a missing tooth.
What is a Dental Bridge?
When you have a missing tooth that’s between two healthy teeth, we can use the ones on either side of the gap to support what’s called a bridge. The bridge itself is a restoration that looks like three dental crowns bonded together. Instead of taking it out like a denture, it’s permanently attached to the supporting teeth.
We can even use extended dental bridges on top of a pair of implants to support 3-4 teeth in a row.
The benefit of bridges is that they efficiently replace missing teeth. The disadvantage is that if the supporting teeth wouldn’t benefit from a crown, it can destroy otherwise healthy tooth structure. In the instance where there is a healthy virgin tooth on either side of the gap, we might recommend an alternative such as a single dental implant .
The Treatment Process
Getting crown or bridge treatment is a fairly identical process because of how they’re designed. Each one is custom matched to your own teeth, so that the restoration blends in with your overall smile. We’ll select the best shade of ceramic, porcelain or zirconia for optimal aesthetics and function.
The process of getting a crown or bridge takes two appointments total. During the first, we’ll remove any damaged structures and prep the teeth being covered so that there’s room for a crown/bridge to slip over it. Next, we’ll take a digital scan or mould, which is then sent to our Australian lab. In the meantime, we’ll put a temporary crown over each prepped tooth so that you will have something to protect it from any sensitivity. In a short period of time, your permanent restoration will be ready to try in. It will be the exact dimensions of how the tooth was prepared. After we permanently bond it in place, you’ll be on your way!
